Cold night. Some folks had their water bladders frozen in the morning. Put on mittens for the first time.
Made our way to Clingmans Dome, with an elevation of over 6600 ft the highest point on the AT. Lot’s of dayhikers there. The Dome also acts as the 200 mile marker. Less than 2000 miles to go!
Cold wind the whole day, despite sunny weather. Snow and ice on the ground in shadier places.
The old growth forest here is really something else. Fallen trees everywhere, dense growth, cathedral-like passages. Moss all over the landscape.
After straddling the North Carolina/Tennessee border for quite some time, the first official sign was at Newfound Gap.
Did the last three miles to Icewater Spring Shelter in the afternoon. Another cold night forecasted.
